Object description
The photograph shows a decorative fabric by Antonina Ivanova (according to the Ukrainian-language simple pencil inscription under the photograph, which does not indicate the place and time of execution). This work was photographed under the same circumstances as the artist's "The Tale of Igor's Campaign". The size of the square side is also about 2 metres, and the colouring of the works is similar. As for the motifs used in the decoration design, the basic ones are the images of birds of paradise and fantastic creatures known in the art of ancient Rus as Simargles (Semargles). Leading experts of the USSR have been studying them since the 1930s. In particular, in the 1948 edition of B. Rybakov's "Crafts of Ancient Rus", with which Antonina Ivanova was probably familiar, it is mentioned that during the Sassanian and "post-Sassanian" eras, there was an intensive spread of products from Persia in Rus (p. 112, as well as image B in picture 83 from this book). It is known that the iconography of the Simargles was based on these Iranian prototypes. In general, the dense and rich decoration was intended to convey fairy tales' ornamental atmosphere. However, it is not the atmosphere associated with adapted versions for a younger audience but with materials compiled and published by Oleksandr Afanasiev (texts published in 1855–1873). These ideas are maximised by combining Eastern aesthetics with the visual practices of ancient Rus and folk art.
