Object description
The russian-language inscription on the back of the photograph, written in blue ballpoint, reads: "Sketch for the painting in the Odesa Khadzhybei Estuary Sanatorium of the All-Ukrainian Central Executive Committee in 1929". The photograph shows a version of the preparatory sketch for the "Village Family", a painting on the premises of the Peasant Sanatorium named after the All-Ukrainian Central Executive Committee (VUTsVK) on the Khadzhybei Estuary near Odesa (1927–1929), made by Antonina Ivanova under the direction of Mykhailo Boichuk. The peculiarity of the picture, in particular the fact that the peasant woman with the sickle is depicted in a different way (not only the adjustment of the angle from three-quarters to profile in later sketches but also a different typeface) than in the final drawing sketch, indicates that the drawing recorded in the photograph is an earlier, probably search version of the final picture. Noteworthy is the expressive portrait of the peasant woman in this version of the sketch, which will probably allow us to identify the person who posed for this work by Antonina Ivanova.
