Object description
The photograph captures an image of the sculpture "Figure of St Matthew (Altar Detail)" from the Gallery’s collection. The work, depicting the figure of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew seated on a low plinth with a book on his lap and dressed in garments with drapery, alongside the symbolic figure of an angel, is a fragment of a Renaissance-Mannerist altar ensemble. The nature of the photography indicates that it was taken for internal museum documentation. The sculpture is photographed against a neutral, mid-tone background. The undeniable value of this photographic document lies in its record of the work’s history at a certain stage of its existence, specifically the state of preservation of the carving details.
