Object description
The photograph captures a two-figure scene (a stone relief) divided into two halves by a vertical pillar-pier: the Virgin Mary stands on the left, and the Archangel Gabriel is on the right. The distribution of space builds a rhythm of dialogue, where the figures face each other across an architectural element that simultaneously demarcates them and unites them in a single action. The pier, terminating in a Gothic wimperg with tracery decoration, resembles a miniature chapel. The plasticity is distinguished by a drapery style characteristic of the Late Gothic period, where the garments fall in deep, broken folds gathered at the feet into turbulent, almost ornamental creases of fabric. This dynamism contrasts with the restrained statics of the faces and gestures. The Virgin Mary, with long wavy hair, stands in a humble pose with her hands crossed over her chest, while the Archangel Gabriel, with a curly hairstyle and a sceptre or scroll in his hand, bears the tidings, his cloak unfolding in broad waves. Curtains, a canopy, and domestic interior details (a bed, objects in the lower plane) are visible on the left and right, transferring the evangelical event into a private, "domestic" space, which is a typical feature of late medieval iconography. The upper edge of the relief sustains the architectural theme: an openwork frieze of crossed diamonds and trefoils mimics Gothic tracery, creating the illusion of a temple vault. The relief is set within a dark profiled frame, in which it is exhibited in the Gallery, heightening the depth and intimacy of the scene.
