Object description
In the first half of the 18th century, burghers' role increased considerably, leading to the emergence of burghers' portraits. They were painted mainly by provincial artists. The ceremonial portrait shows a mature man. He is presented in a formal pose, slightly turned, dressed in a terracotta kontusz (a type of outer garment of the upper class) over a white zupan (a long lined inner garment) and girded with an expensive belt, typical of the nobility of the time. A planar style of execution characterises a portrait. A replica of this portrait is preserved in the Lviv National Art Gallery collection.
