Biography
Erno Eisig Erb is a well-known Lviv artist, one of the most active masters of the interwar decade. In 1883, he entered the State Industrial School in Lviv and studied at the department of drawing, modeling and decorative painting. Erb's teachers were Eduard Miron Pietsch and Tadeusz Rybkowski, graduates of Vienna art schools. After graduating in 1898, Erb studied and worked in a theater studio in Vienna. In 1919, he became an owner of an art studio in Lviv, where he was engaged in painting, making decorations and theatrical costumes for performances as well as decorative paintings for synagogues. The artist participated in art exhibitions in Lviv, Lutsk, Warsaw, Poznan, Lublin and Buffalo (USA). Erno Erb died during the Holocaust in the Yaniv concentration camp (Lviv). His works are stored in the Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery, the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv, the National Museum in Krakow, the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow and other museums in Poland and Israel, as well as in private collections in Ukraine, Israel, Germany, Great Britain and the USA. In his work, the artist has gone from academic and realistic research to modernist experiments. In the 1920s and 1930s, the artist's works were dominated by decorativeness and color expression. Erno Erb painted urban views, domestic scenes, characteristic national types, portraits. His works were mainly dedicated to the landscapes of Lviv, in particular the Krakow suburb, the central part of the city with fountains and views of famous streets.
Object description
An image of a city street. In front of the low three-storey houses, to the right of the middle, under two umbrellas, are wooden tables and benches. There are flowers on the tables and two women are sitting on the benches, next to them is a full-length figure of a man. To the right of the advertising board is another figure. On the left are three women, two of them holding baskets. They are dressed in wide skirts and have shawls thrown over their shoulders. In the painting, the artist turns to his favourite motif of the town market with its rows of market stalls.
