Near the Spring
Henryk Hektor Siemiradzki
Information about author
An idyllic scene and background of a sunny landscape, with mountains on the left side of the canvas and a blue bay with houses on the shore. In the centre and to the right of the work, young beautiful women dressed in light-coloured tunics are resting in the shade of trees by a spring. They are settled on landscaped stones (which are evidently left over from some building). The girls' eyes are fixed on the lower-left corner of the work, where, just a little further away from them, a shepherd boy is playing a pipe. He is depicted from the back, leaning against a large stone.
In the bottom right there is a signature: «H.Siemiradzki». On the reverse side: «Peint pour ma cousine Louise Radziszewska. H. Siemiradzki».
