Object description
Maria Josepha (1699–1757) was an Austrian Archduchess. After her marriage, she became Electress consort of Saxony and Queen of Poland. Marie was the eldest daughter of Joseph I of Habsburg, the Holy Roman Emperor, and Wilhelmine Amalie of Brunswick-Luneburg. In 1719, she married Frederick Augustus II, Elector of Saxony (1696–1763), who later became King of Poland Augustus III. Marie gave birth to 14 children. The portrait depicts Maria Josepha in a low-necked dress with a royal cape lined with fur on the shoulders. A dignified posture, determined look, and strong jawline convey the image of a confident woman. The artist painted the portrait of a woman using clear lines and large planes of local colors.
