Biography
Joseph Sonntag was born in Dresden in 1784. He was a miniaturist, portrait and oil landscape painter, and lithographer. Between 1805 and 1815, the artist worked in Vienna. Later, he lived in Warsaw for some time, and in 1825, he settled permanently in Krakow, where he became a drawing teacher at St. Barbara's Lyceum. He died in Krakow in 1834. Sonntag signed his works with his name, often accompanied by the date.
Object description
Against the backdrop of a cloudy sky is a bust-length portrait of a man facing three-quarters to the right. His gaze is directed towards the viewer. He has reddish, curly hair and short sideburns. He is dressed in a dark jacket, a white shirt, and a white bowtie.
Inscriptions
At the bottom right is the artist's signature: J. Sonntag 1819
