Object description
Dominic (1170–1221) was a Catholic saint, priest, preacher, and founder of the Dominican Order. Iconographically, the saint was depicted in the Dominican habit (a long tunic), scapular, and cloak. At his feet, a dog, one of the iconographic attributes of the saint, peeps out from under the coat. The man holds an open book of the Gospels. It is in this classical image that Dominic is represented in the sculpture from the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A contrapposto figure with his left foot in front, his arms outstretched, his head thrown back and turned to his left shoulder, and the expressive angle of the saint's body is theatrical. The sculpture's composition is based on contrast – the entire body weight is placed on one leg. The saint's monastic garments are imbued with dynamic drapery that forms large planes around the figure, forming separate elements. External dynamic effects convey the inner emotionality of Dominic's image.
