Object description
The full-length sculpture of King David shows the S-shaped silhouette characteristic of Baroque sculpture. The figure from the village of Susidovychi was carved in the iconographic tradition. The man is dressed as a Roman warrior, wearing knight's armour and caligae (open high boots similar to sandals). A cloak is draped over his shoulders and fastened to his chest. The garment wraps around David's body in soft folds of wavy lines and covers his right leg. On his head is a golden crown with precious stones, from which strands of black hair fall to his shoulders. The face shows humility and obedience; the eyes are raised, the head is tilted back, and the right hand is held to the right side. The idealisation of the image of King David gives the sculpture an emotional Baroque tension.
