Object description
The sculpture depicts the figure of the bishop in an S-shaped silhouette, typical of the Baroque period; his left arm is raised, and his right leg is bent. The man's head is turned to the left and slightly raised up. For the author, it was important not to reproduce the anatomical similarity but to convey the form and mood. The bishop seemed to freeze in a theatrical pose. The sculptor focused on depicting a face and characterised it with somewhat idealised features without specifics. The author, reproducing the facial expressions of the bishop, showed an elongated face oval with plump cheeks, an expressive chin, bulging eyes framed with clear arches of the eyelids and a small closed mouth that conveys the image of a person immersed in his thoughts. Precise folds of clothing are modelled by straight lines, which fall down slowly along episcopal garments, and add dynamism to the image. Draperies form abstract and curved planes at different angles, which are not always bound to the figure and do not reproduce its movements.
