Object description
Three works have survived from the village of Sharpantsi, united by the same manner of execution and common interpretation of the image. The sculptures were made by the same artist and are distinguished by their graphic representation of the human figure. The elongated figure of the angel is shown in motion, emphasised by the left leg bent at the knee and the arms outstretched. The slender silhouette of the angel is not anatomically similar. The restrained rhythm of the vertical lines of the drapery is formed by ribbed protrusions, without smooth transitions, with clear folds. The strict geometry of the drapery in the lower part of the sculpture is softened by the calm pattern of the upper part of the tunic, modelled by recessed irregular planes. In his work, the folk master sought to convey a dynamic pose characteristic of the Baroque period. The angel wears a long tunic with flared sleeves. The folds of the garment, which are modelled by clear surfaces with ribbed ends, match his figure. Attention is drawn to the peculiar face, neatly framed by waves of ritualised hair with a distinctive bang. The angel's face is elongated, with a smooth forehead, clear shallow eye contours and a wide mouth, emotionally restrained and imperturbable.
