The figure of the fisherman is shown in profile, turned two-thirds to the left. The man is dressed in plain clothes. He is barefoot and wearing a straw hat. In his right hand, he holds a straw bucket-basket. On his left shoulder, the fisherman carries square nets attached to long thin bamboo sticks and stitched with thin ribbon crosswise and has cork floats at the corners. The etching comes from the album "Customs and National Costumes of the Chinese," which includes 60 images of Chinese people engaged in various activities. Each image is accompanied by an explanation in German and some in French. In the 18th century, artists in Canton (Guangzhou) in southern China created these paintings for Europeans eager to learn more about China and its people.
