Object description
Winged angel heads are often used in the interiors of churches. Sometimes, they fill all the empty spaces on altars and iconostases, decorate the frames of icons, and adorn Holy Doors. Many preserved cherubim create an impressive gallery of character types with individual features. A soft contour line characterises the angel's head. The oval, childlike face is depicted with plump cheeks, a snub nose, a double chin, and a slightly parted mouth. The wide-open eyes, outlined with distinct arcs of the eyelids, give the face an unusual expressiveness. A unique feature of the work is the hair, neatly arranged in a loop, shaved above the forehead and at the back of the head – a hairstyle atypical for angels. The strands of hair are worked with parallel, shallow, straight carved lines that envelop the head in the upper part. Regarding execution style, the sculpture follows the work under the inventory number C-I-1575.
