Object description
The range of apocryphal wooden images by folk artists was quite limited. Most often, it included figures of the apostles Peter and Paul. Thus, the sculpture of the saint is likely an image of the apostle Paul. The full-length figure's head is depicted in a three-quarter turn to the right. The saint is shown barefoot, with outstretched arms, his left leg bent at the knee and extended forward. His gaunt face with a high forehead, prominent cheekbones, straight elongated nose, and small eyes is framed by wavy short hair and a long, shallowly carved beard. The man's distinctive eyes radiate inner peace. His body is sculpted in an anatomically generalised manner. Restrained and composed, the saint's figure is carved without excessive expression.
