Object description
During the Easter period, people placed Christ's thematic figure on a tetrapod, where it remained for forty days until Easter. The volumetrically carved sculpture presents Christ standing with his right foot on a skull. The full-length figure imitates Western iconography, which became widespread in the Ukrainian territory from the 16th century. The curved contrapposto figure of Christ is covered by a red drapery thrown over his left arm, which, having enveloped his hips, descends in a dynamic wave. Sculpted with expressive lines that intersect to form various geometric planes, the drapery adds emotional expressiveness to the artwork. Framed by long, wavy strands of hair cascading smoothly over the shoulders, the head of the saint is slightly lifted. His balanced and tranquil gaze is directed upwards. The master reproduces the proportionally correct body of Jesus with anatomical accuracy. The artist created the Ascension sculpture with reference to professional images, where the dynamics of movement are conveyed by the energetic draperies of the cloak and the leg extended forward.
