Object description
The Ascension of Christ depicts a frontal, volumetrically carved representation of Jesus with his right hand raised in a blessing gesture. The full-length portrayal of the saint follows Western iconography, which became prevalent in the territory of Ukraine from the 16th century. Christ is clothed in a long, golden-coloured cape fastened at the chest, cascading down in smooth horizontal folds. The Savior's exposed, skilfully anatomised athletic body is covered by a loincloth, modelled without sharp protrusions, with diagonal lines of folds sculpted in low relief. His head, slightly raised, is framed by wavy hair and strands of a short wedge-shaped beard. The gentle expression of the kind, humble face is full of humility. The preserved polychrome enhances the plastic perception of the sculpture and the expressiveness and emotionality of Jesus' image.
