Object description
The design of the handmade cross is seven-pointed (the ends of the upper frame have been lost), with an elongated central crosspiece. The work was carved with a chisel using contour, notched, and flat relief carving techniques. The compositional solution of the work is simple and laconic. The front is engraved with a crouched, disproportionate graphic image of the Crucifixion. At the end of the central crossbar are graphic, flat-carved, waist-length figures, and the lower frame, separated from the main composition by a contour profile, is decorated with a geometric pattern in the centre. The perimeter of the cross on the front, repeating the shape of the frame, is covered with an "ark" strip. On the back, in the central part, there is a graphic image of the Virgin Mary wearing a crown and holding the Christ Child in her arms, the decorative solution of which is dominated by straight lines. At either end of the central frame are flat carved waist-length figures inscribed in a circle with small details. The back of the lower frame is separated from the central composition. The decorative decoration of the cross is dominated by a geometric pattern with straight lines as the dominant feature. The simplicity of the images and their graphic representation testify to the authorship of a folk master.
