Object description
The design of the hand cross is a seven-pointed cross with an elongated central crosspiece. Its compositional solution is simple and laconic. Iconographic subjects occupy almost the entire surface of the cross on both sides. On the front side, the central place is reserved for the relief image of the Crucifixion, for which the middle cross and the main part of the rod are allocated. Christ is carved dead, with his eyes closed, his arms hanging, his head tilted to his right shoulder, and his legs bent at the knees. The Saviour's body and the silhouettes of the figures at the six ends of the cross are schematically depicted in flat relief. Above Christ's head is the title with the traditional inscription "INRI". On the back of the cross, in the central part, there is a relief of the Virgin Mary with the Baby Jesus surrounded by stars. The figure of the Virgin Mary and the six figures at the ends of the cross are schematic. In the schematised figures, there is a tendency towards the geometrisation of forms. The depiction of the Virgin and the Christ Child shows the influence of Western European iconography, manifested in the depiction of saints wearing crowns. A thin, smooth, carved band outlines the perimeter of the seven-pointed cross.
