Object description
The main composition is carved in the central part based on a stem and a middle intersection. Using the technique of flat carving, the folk artist has reproduced the crucified Christ, whose crouching figure is schematised in a manner typical of folk primitives: a short body, elongated arms with large open palms and a disproportionately large head. On either side of the crucifixion, in the plane of the central frame, are two winged angels' heads – cherubs – framed by a clear outline with precise details. The traditional title is the inscription "INRI" above the head of Jesus, which is tilted towards the right shoulder. The horizontal plane of the upper and lower crosses, encircled by a "curved" motif, is separated from the main composition. On the reverse side, the central part of the cross is filled with a generational relief of the Virgin Mary wearing a crown and holding the Christ Child. On either side of the central frame are two flat-carved cherubs with an outline. The horizontal planes of the upper and lower frames and on the front are separated by a flat line. The interpretation of the figures and the compositional solution indicate the authorship of a folk master.
