Biography
Ostap (Eustachy) Biliavskyi (1740–1803) was a Ukrainian artist who worked in Western Ukraine. He is known for portrait paintings and religious artworks. He was born in the village of Horodyshche near Berezhany. In the 1760s, Ostap studied at the Academy of St. Luke in Rome. The artist lived and worked in Lviv after 1771. He painted numerous portraits of burghers on order. In the late 1790s and early 1800s, he created a gallery of portraits of Armenian archbishops. In addition to portrait painting, Ostap Biliavskyi was engaged in monumental painting. A significant collection of works by Ostap Biliavskyi has been preserved nowadays.
Object description
Jakub Stefan Augustynowicz (1701–1783) was an Armenian religious figure, a Catholic priest, and the leader of the Lviv Armenian Catholic Church. He got the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Jakub Augustynowicz was born in Lviv, where he later died. He was buried in the crypt of the Armenian Cathedral. In the late 1790s and up to the early 1800s, Ostap Biliavskyi created a gallery of portraits of Armenian Latin bishops, including the portrait of Jakub Stefan Augustynowicz, a brother and predecessor of Jan Tobiasz Augustynowicz. A clear waist-length image of the bishop is depicted against the dark background. The artist managed to express the character of the person portrayed. The works by Ostap Biliavskyi are characterized by a masterful depiction of the individual features of the portrayed people.
