Object description
Ludwik Pociej (? -1771) - son of Trotskiy Voivode Alexander, Lithuanian guardsman, the eldery of Kovel, Trotskiy Voivode. The small format portrait embodies a half-length image of Ludwik with a piercing gaze directed at the viewer. In the 18th century, portraits show expression and attempt to convey the emotional state of the subject. Ukrainian portraiture was dominated by the ennobled portrayal of the person, who was painted dressed in rich attire, with attributes of power. Ludwik Pociej is depicted in a knight's armour, a bright accent on the painting is the red cloak lined with fur. The main focus is on the subject’s face and features. In the upper left corner of the portrait there is an inscription: «L. Pociey / Hetman W. X. Litt.».
