Object description
The work by an unknown artist from the late 18th or early 19th century is a simplified copy of the painting by the renowned Austrian painter Johann Baptist von Lampi the Elder (1751–1830) titled "Artist's Wife and Son" (1783), whose work is represented in several authorised versions in the collections of the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum, the Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art, and the National Museum in Warsaw. In the portrait, against a dark background, the artist's first wife, Anna Maria Franchi (1745–1795), is depicted breastfeeding their younger son, Franz Xaver (1782–1852). The woman is seated in a thoughtful pose, propping up her head with her right hand and wearily gazing at the viewer from beneath her palm. Beneath the baby with golden curly hair is a small white pillow. Bright accents in the work include the woman's blue dress, a pink ribbon in her hairstyle, and a vivid red shawl draped to the left.
