Object description
In addition to portraits of townspeople and nobles, a significant place in Ukrainian painting was held by portraits of clergymen. They were painted with the canonical pattern in the costume of the clergy of a certain rank. The portrait gallery included images of outstanding church figures: metropolitans, archbishops, representatives of the spiritual elite. Often the works were painted in a restrained colour scheme, without excessive decoration, giving them a special expressiveness and attention to the faces and characters of those portrayed. The Catholic priest is depicted in a formal pose, respecting the canonical traditions. In the static image of the man, the main attention is focused on conveying the heavy features of the aged face and his inner state. The accent is on the red garment.
