Object description
Massacre of the Innocents is the killing of all newborn male children in Bethlehem by order of King Herod to destroy Jesus. The event is recounted in the Christmas story of the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:16–18). The composition is dynamic, marked by careful modelling and skilful reproduction of forms.
