Object description
A mythological scene, interpreted in a unique way by the author. According to legend, a mother left her newborn son Daphnis (son of Apollo) under a laurel tree, where he fell asleep, but was found by nymphs who then raised him. In this work, young Daphnis is awakened by a satyr. The foreground composition features children's figures in the left and central parts. In the centre is a naked child with a wreath on his head, sleeping while sitting under a tree with sprawling branches (young Daphnis). On the left is a goat-legged child (Satyr) trying to wake the sleeping boy by poking him in the thigh with a stick. On the right, the composition is completed by a tree and a bush. In terms of style and execution, the work belongs to the era of Louis XV, characterised by the Rococo style.
