Object description
According to the catalogue of Vladyslav Lozynskyi's collection, this figure is a replica of a classical original from the British Museum, where the ancient character is depicted surrounded by dogs (data not confirmed). According to the myth, the hunter Actaeon was turned into a deer by the goddess Diana (Artemis) and torn apart by his own dogs. The sculpture depicts a youthful figure, modelled in contrapposto, half-naked – the draperies of a cloak with a patterned border cover the young man's left shoulder, hips, knees and back, providing additional support for the figure, which is slightly tilted to the left. His right arm is bent at the elbow in front of his belt, probably holding a bow. With his left hand, Actaeon holds a quiver with arrows hanging on his right shoulder, attached by a strap. The work is executed in the Mannerist style, without a solid support and in a shaky movement. The figure is mounted on a wooden cylindrical pedestal with profiles at the top and bottom, made at a later date on a lathe.
Inscriptions
The lower profile of the pedestal bears the inscription in white paint: "№ С-І-559 Л.ОКГ". On the bottom of the pedestal, in black: "9 / G.N.M.L". Below is the stamp "Gal. Nar. m. Lwowa". Above is a mark with the inscription: "G.N.m.L/18" (crossed out in red).
