Object description
The work is part of an altar crucifixion. The figure of Christ is aimed at frontal viewing. Jesus is carved with his head tilted to the right shoulder. His arms are spread upward, his body is slumped, his feet are overlapping, nailed to the cross with a single nail. The elongated face is modelled conventionally, its expression sorrowful and concentrated. The hair and beard are indicated by carving, although without fine detailing. Christ's body is presented in a generalised manner: the muscles of the chest, abdomen, and ribs are only schematically indicated. A loincloth, tied with a cord, is depicted around the hips. The folds of the fabric are emphasised by deep carved lines, which give the drapery decorative expressiveness. The crucifixion is notable for its simplicity and conventionality of form, yet it carries a spiritual charge. It is not an academic skill that is evident in it, but the sincerity of the iconographic image, characteristic of folk sacred art.
