Object description
The polychrome sculptural image depicts the dead Christ. His head is tilted to the right. His textured face has a sorrowful yet peaceful expression. Dark strands of long hair fall in soft waves onto his shoulders. His head is adorned with a crown of thorns, modelled from two intertwined cords. The master emphasises the Saviour's sacrifice and mercy. The slightly curved body of Christ is anatomically skilfully depicted, with a clearly defined chest with textured ribs, a sunken abdominal cavity, and bent knees. The pale flesh tone contrasts with the bright red wound from the spear on the right side of the torso. The figure of Christ radiates divine peace and majesty. A striking accent is provided by the golden perizoma (loincloth), which wraps around the hips in soft horizontal folds.
