Object description
Following the examples of Western iconographic tradition, the master carved Christ at the moment of death. His head is slightly tilted to his right shoulder, his eyes are closed, and his face shows an expression of suffering and inner sorrow. His head is adorned with a symbol of martyrdom – a crown of thorns. The static image is broken up by dishevelled strands of short hair, which give the work an expressive quality. The master attempts to convey physical exhaustion through the elongated, somewhat disproportionate figure of Christ with clearly defined ribs and a sunken stomach. The legs are bent, and the toes are modelled schematically, with minimal attention to detail. The loincloth covering the hips is modelled with clear graphic lines that convey a sense of movement. The sculpture is an example of folk sacred art, where the aim was to convey spiritual meaning rather than to perfectly reproduce anatomical features.
