Object description
The sculptural image of the Crucifixion has significant damage: part of the head, lower limbs, and arms are missing. Despite the absence of fragments of the sculpture, the work is a highly artistic example of Ukrainian wooden sculpture, combining realism with deep spiritual meaning. The figure of Christ is modelled with anatomical accuracy. The features of the body are plastically conveyed, reflecting physical torment and exhaustion: a protruding chest, sunken stomach, bent legs, tense muscles. The bowed head symbolises the moment of death and humility. Christ's naked body is covered with a perizoma, rendered in volume, with vivid modelling of the folds, which gives the image plasticity. The crucifixion conveys the main idea of the Christian faith – Christ's sacrifice for the salvation of humanity.
