Object description
The sculptural image of the angel's head is balanced and harmonious, with the main emphasis on inner expression. The face has rounded, almost childlike features: plump cheeks, a clearly defined chin, small lips, and large eyes that seem to be immersed in a state of inner contemplation. The sculpturally crafted image is distinguished by its smooth lines, which make the cherub seem alive and expressive. The volume is conveyed softly, without sharp contrasts, creating a feeling of tenderness. The compositional integrity is formed by small wings, indicating the heavenly nature of the image. The simplicity of the forms, the absence of sharp details, and the roundness of the outlines emphasise the touching innocence. The head tilted to one side, and the lowered wings give it expression and lively movement. The gilding gives it a solemn appearance, bringing it closer to the iconographic canon of angelic ranks. The sculptural image of a cherub was an element of decorative adornment of the altar, iconostasis, or architectural composition.
