The painting depicts a hermit against a cloudy sky background. His upturned gaze, barely open mouth, left hand pressed to his heart and the crucifix in the other hand indicate that he is praying to God. The skull and the Holy Scriptures are semantically significant, as the first symbolises the death and suffering of Christ, and the second represents the Divine word. Although the saint's identity has yet to be established, it can be assumed that the painting depicts St. Francis' meditation. The artist placed a bookmark with the date of creation of the painting, "1749", between the pages of the Bible.
