Biography
Iványi Grünwald Béla (1860–1940) was a Hungarian artist, teacher, member and leader of the artists' colony in Nagybánya (Baia Mare) and founder of the colony in Kecskemét. His main subject is village life. He studied in Budapest, Munich, then at the Académie Julian in Paris. His art is marked by different phenomena of modernism, first French naturalism, later he was attracted by plein air painting and costumed scenes. He adopted a free style of brushstroke, a bright palette and abandonment of the strict rules of perspective from the Fauvists (under the influence of young artists returning from Paris and an exhibition of French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists held in Budapest in 1907).
Object description
Three girls are sitting on the shore of a lake, depicted at the deep. Two naked are shown on the right, one is sitting on a white drapery, and the other one, behind her, is on a pedestal with an ochre-brown drapery on her legs. The other girl opposite is dressed in a blue dress tied with a white apron; she is holding on to a tree branch, beside her is a wicker basket with dishes. The shores of the lake are surrounded by dense trees. To the right and to the left are tall trees. In the depths, the sky can be seen, covered in balls of clear clouds. The figures are represented conventionally, flat, outlined in black, without any details. The artist uses a post-impressionistic manner of performance, applying colour with broad strokes.
