Object description
The miniature represents a waist-length image of a young blue-eyed woman in a red velvet Empire silhouette dress. The gown is decorated with gold; along a low neckline one can see standing lace. On the neck there is a string of pearls; there are teardrop-shaped pearls in the ears. Golden locks of hair are falling down on her forehead. The hairstyle is complemented by a wreath of pink roses. The miniature replicates the upper fragment of the portrait of Maria Walewska, Countess d'Ornano, a Polish noblewoman and a mistress of Emperor Napoleon. It was painted by François Gérard in 1812. Primarily, the portrait was in the collection of the Count d'Ornano, and now is in Versailles.
