Object description
Anna was the mother of the Virgin Mary and the youngest daughter of the priest Matthan of Bethlehem. She is one of the most respected figures in Christianity. The graceful figure of the saint woman is represented in the type of the S-shaped silhouette (figura serpentinata) that dominated in Baroque sculpture. Anna is represented in a dynamic pose with her hands folded in prayer and elbows spread aside. Her clothing is given a shape of dynamic folds formed by geometric planes. The sculptor carved the woman’s features in a peculiar manner. These are visible cheekbones, a straight big nose, a high forehead, arched eyebrows, and the almond-shaped eyes with lowered eyelids. The image of Anna is full of humility and obedience.
