Object description
Dominic (1170–1221) was a Catholic saint, priest, preacher, and founder of the Dominican Order. Iconographically, the saint was depicted in the Dominican habit (a long tunic), scapular, and cloak. This classical image is reproduced in the sculpture. He holds a book of the Gospels in his left hand, and a small dog looks out from under the cloak. These are iconographic symbols of Dominic. His head is slightly tilted to the right. His face shows an expression of thoughtfulness and sorrow, and his eyes look down from under clearly defined eyelids. The saint is depicted in a contrapposto pose with his left leg stretched out. The image is characterised by a closed silhouette and a simple treatment of the drapery, modelled using large and smooth surfaces. The figure of Saint Dominic is not static but rather dynamic, created by the diagonal lines of the folds of his clothes.
