Object description
Sculptures of the Apostles are often found in churches, especially on ambons. The figure of Luke the Apostle comes from the cathedral. He is depicted with a bull, symbolising Christ's sacrifice for human sins. The dynamic pose of the seated saint is in the Baroque style. The tilted head, expressive cheekbones, arched eyebrows, and rolled eyes emphasise the emotionality of the image. Luke's head is wrapped in a drapery of softly woven folds. His beard is carved with symmetrical waves of hair arranged in neat curls. Despite its restraint and gentleness, the sculpture of the saint retains baroque emotionality.
