Object description
The sculpture of the Sorrowful Christ from the village of Vybranivka is based on the canonical image of the Lord, whose iconography differs from others in that Christ holds a rod in his hand. This attribute is derived from the sceptre, the insignia of a monarch, and the shepherd's staff. Christian iconography represented the staff as a short sceptre or a pointed spear. In the sculptural composition, the Sorrowful Christ holds a rod resembling a spear in his left hand. His pensive gaze is directed into the void. Thick drops of bright red blood flowing from the wounds of the crown of thorns cover Christ's entire body, with a small white bandage on his thighs.
