Object description
Allegorical sculptural representations are common attributes of funerary ceremonies, "castrum doloris". An allegorical female figure with her foot on a skull was part of the sacred ensemble. The elongated full-figure sculpture on a pedestal exudes restraint and static, felt through the posture with the body slightly curved to the right, the head turned to the right shoulder and the position of the hands. Her face is not evidently attractive, with a low forehead smoothly transitioning into a straight nose, deeply set eyes with lowered eyelids, and rosy, weighty cheeks. Her hair is meticulously worked into a smooth hairstyle by engraving and gathered into a neat bun at the back. The woman wears a long dress with a corset adorned with delicate pleat lines and rounded edges that slowly descend downwards, leaving the bare feet exposed. Over the dress is a cape fastened on the right shoulder. A generalised drapery pattern and soft shaping of the image characterise the work.
