Object description
The contrapposto figure on a square base showcases the idealised athletic body of Christ, reminiscent of ancient sculptures. His full-figured body, depicted in motion, is perfectly balanced. The master skilfully, with anatomical accuracy, conveys the saint's softly rendered muscular and slightly bent body, wrapped in a loincloth that envelops the hips. The drapery is tied in a large knot, creating a remarkable interplay of light and shadow through recessed planes of folds with rounded, expressive edges. Christ's head is tilted to the right, conveying tension through the taut neck muscles. Rolled eyes, sunken cheeks, and drawn eyebrows reflect an expression of grief and resignation, while the tense expression creates a slight contrast. The sculptor imbued the figure of Christ with a sense of life and movement.
