Object description
Against a landscape backdrop, a nude Venus rests on a blue draped fabric with light pink pillows. The painting belongs to an unknown artist and is a replica of the remarkable "Sleeping Venus" by Giorgione, which represents one of the most idealised female images of the Renaissance era. The influence of Giorgione's composition was significant and continuous. The Sleeping Venus serves as an allegory, a symbolic representation of Nature. The motif of Venus sleeping in an eternal springtime garden can be traced back to Roman wedding poems. Usually, the goddess of love was awakened by Cupid.
