Object description
The man sitting at the table is depicted in full face. He is dressed in brown quilted pants and a long blue robe. The man is girded with a black belt with yellow insets. A round flat hat with a hanging fur strand and a red ribbon is on the man's head. There are black and white fabric shoes on his feet. With the help of scissors, the man is cutting hair on the red hat. There is a hairbrush on the table in front of the man; on the edges of the table, there are workpieces. To the left of the man, on the floor, there is a tobacco pipe with a long shank. A red tobacco pouch is tied to the shank. The etching comes from the album "Chinese Customs and National Costumes", which includes 60 images of Chinese people engaged in various activities. An explanation in German accompanies each image; some are written in French. In the eighteenth century, artists in Canton (Guangzhou) in southern China created such paintings for Europeans seeking to learn more about China and its people.
