Object description
A prominent figure in Catholicism was St Peter, the first Pope of Rome. He was considered the prince of all the apostles. Depictions of Saints Peter and Paul were common in the Orthodox East and Western European religious and secular art. The sculptural image shows a full-length figure of the saint with his arms outstretched. Peter is dressed in a long tunic with a mantle thrown over his left shoulder. The author modelled the garment with massive folds surrounding the figure in diagonal lines in the upper part and descending in vertical strands. The saint's head, slightly inclined towards his left shoulder, is covered with expressive waves of loose hair and a short beard, emphasising the image's restrained emotionality. Peter's face, with its pointed cheekbones and hollow cheeks, is stern and somewhat anxious. The work is characterised by monumental forms, anatomical realism, and an angle that emphasises the inner expression.
