Object description
The painting "Saint Catherine" is a copy of the work by Giovanni Pietro Rizzoli, known as Giampetrino (c. 1495–1549, Milan). Giampetrino was one of the leading Lombard followers of Leonardo da Vinci. The work's iconography is typical, depicting Saint Catherine with auburn hair in prayer, with her body partially covered by a red-purple cloak around her hips. On either side of the saint, wheels with sharp metal protrusions are shown, representing the instruments of her torture. The background is characterised by red flashes of paint and elements of bright and dark clouds, which dramatically outline the scene of martyrdom and simultaneously highlight the illuminated figure of the saint for the viewer. Given the formal and iconographic characteristics, the composition is typical of the painter's style, evident in various versions of the painting.
