Object description
The sculptural image of Christ was the central part of the Crucifixion composition. The figure is carved, imitating Western iconography. The Saviour is nailed to the cross with three nails; his feet are interlocked. Christ is depicted as dead, with his head tilted to his right shoulder and his eyes closed. His profile and textured face are framed by the hair, which falls over his shoulders and is modelled in shallow, wavy, ridged lines. The athletic body of Christ is skilfully anatomically recreated. The majestic, calm figure of Jesus is naturalistic, with an emphasised suffering look, which is enhanced by the raised brow arches, slightly bent knees, raised chest, and bloody wound. The composition is decorated with a knotted thigh bandage, modelled with shallow soft lines of folds that smoothly fall down.
