Biography
Paul Strudel (1648, Cles, Italy – 1708, Vienna, Austria) was an Austrian sculptor, architect, engineer, and artist of the Baroque period. He was the brother of Peter Strudel, the founder of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1686, he served as the court sculptor for Emperor Leopold I, under whose commission he created 16 full-sized marble busts of rulers from the Habsburg dynasty. He oversaw the design and construction of the Vienna "Plague Column" (1686–1893). He authorises a series of marble relief portraits of Emperor Leopold I and his sons, Joseph I and Charles VI. The creation of relief portraits continued in Paul Strudel's workshop even after his death, until 1714.
