Biography
Wlodzimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer (1862, Ludzmierz – 1923, Krakow) was a Polish painter and graphic artist, one of the leading representatives of the "Young Poland" movement, as well as a politician, public figure, and writer. He studied painting at the Krakow, Vienna, Munich, and Paris art academies. From 1889 to 1895, he was a student of Jan Matejko and also studied classical philology at the Jagiellonian University. In 1895, he settled in Bronowice Male near Krakow. From 1897, he was a member of the Society of Polish Artists "Sztuka". He painted genre scenes, primarily focusing on rural themes, portraits, and landscapes. He also worked on polychromy and scenography.
Object description
The artist's stay in Bronowice Male resulted in paintings focused on rural themes. Among them is undoubtedly the work "Dances in a Village Inn", where the author captures moments of relaxation and merriment, which are rare in rural areas. The dark interior of the inn, with grey walls, is filled with couples dancing. However, the artist emphasises the figures of two girls in the foreground, who seem to be showcasing traditional folk attire. The first girl, dressed in a floral skirt and a black corset embroidered with gold, stands facing the viewer. The second girl dances with her back turned, wearing a red skirt with abundant pleats, a blue-and-white striped apron, and a corset with flowers embroidered in gold. The overall dark background of the painting allows the artist to highlight the vibrant colours of the clothing and its texture with light.
