Biography
Frans Francken II (Frans Francken the Younger) (1581–1642) was a Flemish painter of the Baroque period.
Object description
The right part of the painting shows a fragment of a monumental building with a column on a high base. In the left part is a vast landscape, and in the centre is the image of a white dove against a cloud – a symbol of the Holy Spirit. In the centre of the composition is the figure of Madonna with the Child on her lap. Opposite her, St. Elizabeth is depicted kneeling. She embraces the young John the Baptist, who prays to Christ. Christ, in turn, bends down to John, embracing him with his left hand and blessing him with his right. The artist surrounded this central scene with the figures of saints and angels: St. Joseph in prayer, St. Catherine of Alexandria in her crown with her attributes – a wheel and a sword, and St. Mary Magdalene with a chrismatory – a vessel filled with aromatic oil with which Mary anointed Jesus' feet and dried them with her hair.
